What are Cannabis hybrids?
The word hybrid comes from Latin and means “of two different origins”, a cannabis hybrids are nothing more than a mixture of the main strains.
Seedbanks and Growers differentiate between hemp strains such as “Sativa”, “Ruderalis” or “Indica”, whereby the distinguishing features are usually the smell, the effect and the characteristics when growing. Hybrids are simply another classification, a mixture of the other main strains. The mixing ratio may vary depending on the crossing.
How does cannabis hybrid breeding work?
In nature, a male plant usually has to pollinate a female plant with pollen. This is the same with breeding, only that the breeders choose exactly which strains and which plants they want to cross. Breeders specifically use plants to adopt or create new effects or the best traits, which happens in a controlled environment.
After crossing, germinated seeds are produced. Then hybridization continues until the breeders are satisfied with the attributes. In order to consolidate the traits, the seed is now diced. The offspring are bred at least two times with the parent strain. So you can be sure that you always get the same result when you want to harvest the seeds.
There is the asexual and the sexual possibility to propagate the hybrid. Either you combine the parents, similar to nature. Nowadays it is also possible to divide the roots into parts or even clones. This is more expensive, but you can be sure that you always get the exact same plant.
Why are Cannabis hybrids created?
The size of the cannabis strains is different, Sativas tend to grow large and tree-like and Indicas tend to grow as wide as bushes. If you breed hybrids, you can choose these traits and try them around until you are satisfied. This is advantageous if you only have certain cultivation possibilities. This way you can avoid problems with the choice of location, such as deciding between outdoor cultivation and cultivation tents. It is no longer possible to determine which variety it is on the basis of size and growth.
To vary the resin content of the plant as desired.
All Autoflowering varieties are bred at one time with a Ruderalis plant. This means that they are considered to be hybrids and that time under the light is not important for growth.
Colour and endurance:
There are strains (mainly Indica) which have a beautiful purple colour and can grow under cold and sunny conditions. To transfer these characteristics to a new strain, you cross and create some hybrids. This way you can make more profit. For the colour you don’t even need the cold temperatures.
There are also strains that are better equipped against diseases and pests. This would be another reason to breed with those plants.
The CBD content:
By a hybridization it is possible to determine the effect of the cannabis variety. Many people look for varieties with certain CBD contents due to medical problems. Many crosses are created that have either CBD or THC concentrations as extreme values. For example, there is medicinal cannabis for children, which contains little THC but a lot of CBD. A strain that is more sativa dominated is more likely to stimulate creativity, whereas an indica dominated strain is more likely to relax.
